Just before Covid I bought a pair of cheap tarp poles via GearFreak.
I thought that this winter I might actually get a chance to use them but I have reservations about the strength of the small modification I just made.
Both poles were of 6 sections and 1800 tall nominally with each section of 330mm, supposed to be 16mm but closer to 15mm. What I have done is taken one section from pole A and added it to pole B to give me better standing room at a taller end. I'm a little concerned that there will be too much deflection now in the taller pole and a bit weaker.
Keeping any added weight to a minimum should I look at an exterior sleeve about 450mm long or adding in an inner section to give an approximation of a thicker wall?
I can get a Yunan section from ANSCO for $6:40 and being 450mm long it would bridge 2 sections well.

Shop stocks probably gone now but may come up again.

If this was for a sled carry those would work, but I wanted these to fit on or in my winter rucksack so I want to keep to no longer than 600mm if possible.
A small group of us is thinking about a slow winter amble from PV hut to Mt Hotham and I wanted to pack a group tarp.

I think what I need I gave away a while ago.
The top 20mm shaft section of a two part walking/trekking pole.

Top section of a kmart pole is 18mm diameter and could work as a sleeve. If you can get the grip off then you'll get 450mm. Hardly premium aluminum but also only 10 bucks.

I'm headed up to Falls soon and I'll checkout the discard pile at the ski school and the race club too.

Rather than a sleeve I would lash another (smaller) pole to the middle setction , say at least half of the pole height.

Franco do you think that would be stronger or simply easier?

I think that it will be stronger because no matter what direction the wind is pushing the pole , all of the added one will help. If you add a sleeve you probably put all of the load on a small part of the sleeve. just guessing.
You coult test this yorself. make one of each and see wich one it's easier to bend.
