Quilting synthetic insulation thought.

Postby Moondog55 » Wed 22 Jul, 2020 6:03 pm

Yes it's another Covid project but at the moment it is only a thought experiment.
I need and want a new half sack having sold the Red Rabbit one that didn't work for me as the shell was far too breathable [ ie: not windproof at all] and because it is for Australia and snow I want this to be in Synthetic insulation.
I have all this 3M LiteLoft in 40GSM and it needs to be scrimmed and stitched at 200 to 250mm intervals
I don't want stitch lines on the shell if it can be avoided.
Now 40GSM isn't enough insulation to survive a night out without a lot of shivering so I would need to use 2 layers which would be OK and about 1.8Clo.
That's way short of the 6 to 8 Clo needed for sleep and comfort but it should be enough to stop me freezing to death as I'd normally be wearing aout a Clo with the combination of tights and windproofs, and I would naturally also have a bivvy sack for another possible 5C of protection.
My thought experiment is to get some mosquito netting or similar UL material from Spotlite and put it between the two layers of LiteLoft and hand stitch each layer in alternate lines and then use it as you would APEX, just edge stitching.

I can't use the Thinsulation I have because that is not easilly compressable
Thoughts?

I think it could work quite well. Maybe 10d nylon would work? Do you have some spare insulation to experiment with?

For the scrim Pete? Mozzie net is much lighter and for scim much cheaper. I was thinling EPIC for the outer shell, I found the mislaid fabric box
yes I have some scraps of insulation, I'll get out a needles and some of the scrap No-See-Um

Yes, for the scrim. Thinking it would be a little more robust and add some thermal/wind blocking efficiency?
Something like membrane 7.

Sounds like an interesting project.

I'm not sure that adding in another windproof layer would give much benefit Pete
The EPIC is less than 4CFM as it is and if I got caught out I'd likely have a bivvybag anyway and the scrim normally used is less than 13GSM ad bridal tulle is less than that. I can buy tulle at Spotlite, I'd need to import anything else and at the moment that is a huge consideration. i've had a new micro APAP machine sitting at New York for almost a month now waiting on a plane to have space

So for the last few rainy hours I have been hand stitching. Alternate layers was just too hard on my concentration so I am simply going to go with basting the scrim using 3 layers of scrim and 2 layers of the LiteLoft.
Hand basting is both tedious and hard on my back because I am using the dining room table not the workbench.
Might work out to be a little on the short side at only 1150mm foot to hem, so possibly I need to add in another piece doubled over to make it taller, 1350 t0 1500 works better for me

Pictures will follow soon I hope, added an offcut to get a better length, should be somewhere between 1300 and 1350 length when sewn up and close to 1450 girth.

Oops Still haven't taken pictures but I won't be doing this again because it adds a lot of weight, or I mismeasured the weight of the insulation batt and it's a lot heavier than 40GSM
2 layers of batting and the scrim and with the old 2ounce nylon as the outer shell and it weighs 1140 grams. 1500 tall tho and 450mm round footbox

Well!
I have made a major stuff-up.
I should double check and nor rely on my notes or the internet for everything, I'll be spending the next few days unpicking todays work.
Turns out I was layering two lots of 100GSM insulation; not 2 layers of 40GSM. I did think it was very warm and thick while I was sewing but I guess I was on a roll.
