Where to buy silnylon for DIY & what machine

Hi peeps,

I'm wanting to give DIY a go, just some basic things like poncho, dry sacks. I was thinking of starting out with some cheap 1.1 silnylon while I workout how to sew it as I have hardly used a sewing machine and I'm sure it's not simple to sew. Don't want to pay out for good stuff and fluff it up.
Can anyone recommend either Aust or Overseas suppler's.
Also, can I use a standard house hold machine? If so do you need special needles?
Thanks ☺

Simon at Tier Gear prob has some. Otherwise OWFINC in US, or Rockywoods. Normal sewing machine fine. Don't make the stitch length too short, or it's a case of "tear along the perforation". You can get silinyon double sided tape from sail makers if you with to try to tape seal.

Hi Spoke,

As Andrew said we have some silicone coated polyester that we use on all our tarps, we don't currently have silnylon but do have some samples being sent out from a new fabric manufacturer next week. Any home machine should handle sil coated fabrics, and just use a universal type needle matched to the thread size.

Whereabouts in Tassie are you? We are in Deloraine.

If you can't get what you want from Simon consider ripstop by the roll. They have great range of fabrics that they have proper specifications on. When buying from os always try to find a supplier that can supply your entire order to save multiple postage costs.

To add to Mark's recommendation, if we don't have what you need, Dutchware Gear is also worth checking out. We deal with them a lot and there level of personal service is normally excellent as is OWFINC mentioned by Andrew.
