MYOG Sawyer Gravity Filter Setup

Postby icefest » Wed 20 Nov, 2013 10:22 am

In a recent Sawyer Filter thread I mentioned that I had just completed a gravity water filter setup.
Someone mentioned that they wanted to know how I made it, so here I've tried to explain how it was done.

I have mentioned my fondness for AquaEssence water bottles before in the past. Not only are they cheaper than original Sawyer bottles (a couple of dollars per bottle) but they are also lighter (1.5L = 22g; sawyer 1L=28g). They're also clear so I can see if there are bugs/dirt mold on the inside of them. I always carry one spare, which I'd recommend with the original sawyer bottles too. These are the bottles I used. I have a original pointONE filter.

I had some old 5mm clear hose left over from a cider siphon.

The attachments to the filter are simple, just heat and push over the tube.

Attaching to the bottle was a bit harder. Fortunately the inside neck of the bottle gets wider towards the top. This means that you can use the pipe itself as a seal.

Firstly a hole was made in the lid to enable the hose to fit through.
Thereafter the hose was stretched over a conical piece of plastic so that the hose would jam on the inside of the hole in the lid when pulled out - creating seal number 1.

This same cone also increased the diameter of the plastic tube so that when the lid was screwed on the pipe is jammed against the inside of the neck of the bottle. Remember that this neck gets narrower further down. This wedging effect creates a second seal, both of which are forced tighter when the lid is screwed on.
This drawing should help explain the seal.

The outflow end has 20cm of pipe so that I can put clean water into any other container that I please.

If you want a closeup of any part of the setup let me know and I'll post it.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.
