OK
I have aluminium pole, I have cut the PP at 100mm so the pole goes into the PP fitting for that 100mm, That is for both the legs and the ridge pole, in addition to the 100mm there is the 35mm of the fitting itself, so where I will drill holes for the eyebolts there will be a thickness of about 8mm of PVC plus the ~2.3mm of the aluminium
Most of the strain should be taken where the PVC is at its thickest, the pipe itself was used as a reducing sleeve as well as for a little added strength
I've been talking to some Canadians on the Winter Trekking forum and they use these or similar fittings down to -30C so I should have an adequate safety margin
The poles do not touch anywhere inside the fitting, I am relying on the strength pf the PVC pressure fitting. I would not try this with ordinary PVC fittings, the PP are about 5 times stronger I think; perhaps greater
