Ash removal and Rocket type stoves?

Thu 05 Jan, 2017 2:11 pm

How necessary is ash removal and on how regular a basis?
This stove will borrow some design features from the bigger rocket stoves except I will rely on the extended flue for the heat. But it is for the winter camp so I can't pick it up and shake it outside and the fuel loader will only be 135mm in diameter so a bit tight for my hand
I am using an old stainless steel pressure tank with a small hole in it to take a hose attachment
I'm after a 20 litre drum with a removable lid if anybody has one for sale, this is for the container to hold the firebox insulation

from how I understand it, and from the few I've seen, ash removal is pretty frequent as it will block the airflow. I've seen one with a door out the bottom/back to allow cleaning, but it was only designed to run for a couple hours, then clean. Not what you are looking for. Maybe a made to fit ash rake would allow you to pull ashes out from the vent tube, that and a tin bucket, and you should be set.

OK so I have posted these pix before somewhere.
I'll rethink what I was going to do and put the existing small hole at the bottom and make some sort of ash collection system using a tin can and rather than using a somewhat complicated heat exchange I'll cut a 4 inch/100mm hole in the top for the flue I already have and use a stack robber made from LW steel tophat. Using a stack robber should mean low heat where it exits the wall of the tent so I can use and ordinary rubber boot and not a high temperature silicon unit
Just waiting now for ALDI to have a sale on the Dremel clone cutting tool
Anybody know what the temperature limit on rockwool is?
It would be cheaper for me to use rockwool that I already have rather than buying 12 litres of vermiculite

So I'll just put the existing hole down the bottom and use an empty tin to collect the ashes on a continual basis, I'll just need to make the legs I am going to fit taller so I can fit the tin underneath or find a very wide shallow tin
