Gradient

What is the most useful way of expressing gradient on a route card ?

Not sure how many appreciate what % slopes mean? Or What degrees equate to?
I'd go for 1: as in 1:20
1 vertical to 20 horizontal.

Or just put 'Gentle' through to just 'Plain Blooming Steep' :D

If you Google "Gradient", then the 8th item down (website of Macquarie Uni Faculty of Science) gives it to you pretty simply and of the 3 choices, the 1:20 option looks good: 1 vertical to 20 horizontal. The two pages belong directly to a mapping shop lesson.
I've seen High Camp Hut up to Mt Eliza described as 1:1, or a 45deg. incline.
