Topo's ?

Postby TenderPaw » Sat 14 May, 2011 6:47 am

I haven’t made my mind up 100% on which walks I'll do when I'm in Oz or NZ(I have a general idea of area's just havent set my feet yet). I plan on making my decision when I'm in each place. I know that by not committing ahead of time some walks might be booked out and that will be part of the journey (the Overland track will be booked once arriving in Cairns but this is the only one that I will commit to) .

So my main concern is when I arrive in a city/town and go to DERM to check on availability/pay will I be able to pick up a good topo map there?

Or do I have to commit to a schedule ahead of time and book walks, and order topo's of the web?

One point of this journey is to go where ever my feet take me...

As far as I am aware the OT is the only walk in Australia where you will have to book.

Local Topo's are easliy purchased from local outdoor stores.

Maybe I'm thinking of the great walks in N.Z.

If so, this helps keep my journey a journey!

Some of the tracks in NZ designated "Great Walks" require booking. You can get info online here.

If you haven't already, check out the NZ Tramper forum for more information on these and other tracks in NZ.

DOC offices & outdoor shops in NZ sell topos, or you can get more info on the hard and soft versions of NZ topos from LINZ.

Also, if you don't want to commit to a booking for your Overland track walk, you can do the Cradle Mountain area as a day walk, then walk into the mid-section of the Overland Track via Walls of Jerusalem, all without booking - though you will still need to pay for the parks entry pass and of course organise transport to the start of the tracks.
Come on lads, let's get home. The sky's beginning to bruise, night must fall, and we shall be forced to camp.
