Bike Packing

Anyone else do any Bike Packing have just started doing a little of late.

Current Bike set-up is a Merida 96, with a Dry Sack strapped to the rear seat/seat post and Source hydration pack. With this set-up I can carry everything for a overnight trip.

I will post a gear list once I weigh everything.

Thanks for the link - interesting site. We used to do a bit of cycle touring and now am looking for ways to include my seven and ten year old. I don't mind a heavy load as its not like we go fast anyway, but when you are carrying for 4 it starts to get a bit tricky to fit everything on the two adult bikes, especially if water is an issue. Some of the ideas like using the wheels for tent poles are so obvious in retrospect but I'd never have thought of them myself. Brilliant. I'd be interested in what you find works for our conditions. My standard touring set up was the opposite end of the weight spectrum to you - I used a BOB trailer with my macpac Torre pack just chucked into it. It was a flexible system though - if I wanted to dump the bike for a few days and just go walking there was no mucking around with multiple bags etc, and if there was a need to carry a slab of beer it could be accommodated.

I've been thinking about this for a while now - but not for the open road. A folding bike and an overnighter pack for interstate work trips, or for city hopping and using public transport.

have been hacking away at a 1000km ride from adelaide to the northern flinders for the last year (one more stage to go)

have used a bob tralier ("ibus") which has woked really well with my dual suspension MTB - easy to pack, waterproof, and doesnt effect the handling of the bike in off road situations - lots of space for gear which was useful when carrying a couple of days of water

would recommend it
