UTM Grid Vs Latitude and Longitude

Postby commando » Sat 18 Jul, 2020 2:12 pm

GPS use with some maps are just better in the UTM Grid Aus 66 than the Lat & Long WGS84

The example map shows UTM grids very close together but Lat and Long has only one reference point.

Correct - do you have a question in relation to that?

Hi Phil, well yes, a few questions in fact. just going off your Signature.

Why is there no map references at all... Lat Long, UTM Grid, MGRS, other than sign posted search and rescue positions
in the Lerderderg Gorge National Parks Service PDF maps and why are all the National Parks service maps slowly being
deleted or have been deleted from use from all of Victoria's National parks , not sure about other states.

Hi Commando,

Depends on where you are getting the maps from and what their purpose is. "Tourist' type directional maps often have no coordinates but a paper map will nearly always have them. Even some digital maps that are used in apps etc often have the coordinates missing as the program has the ability to show them in some other form.

Where are you getting these from?

PS My Parks association was with Parks and Wildlife in Tassie.

OK - looks like that is the Tourist map of the Park but its also available for apps on phones etc for free. Try the Avenza map program and search for Lerderberg and you can download the map for free. The avenza program can then display coordinates in a variety of ways.

Recent governments are denying Parks the funding they need to provide a decent service to the public. In comparison to what was available a few years ago, the current website is a farce.

It seems registration is required and when i see shopping cart... i look the other way.

The Avenza maps available seem fairly limited and not exhaustive, and not what used to be available
in National Parks website, where every State Park had a map online in PDF format.

Found this in Alltrails and it seems OK and scrollable to all over the State. example attached

To see what was available, in the past, 'wayback machine' may help https://web.archive.org/

Lots of other mapping software out there - often on the “freemium” model. They can use many different Co-ordinate sets.

The grid lines are typically not printed on the map but they display the co-ordinates of the cursor.

Eg I use Pocket Earth which uses the Open Street Map and a free (albeit basic) version. The minimal cost for the “pro” version is definitely worth it.

I’m aware there are other free ones out there but I don’t have experience with them. I have used Avenza but prefer Pocket Earth.
