In the 2018 National Visitor Survey;

Bushwalking and visits to national parks increased by 12 per cent

The number of nights spent at non-commercial camping and caravan grounds increased 15 per cent to 20 million per year, double the growth rate for more traditional holiday accommodation.

Probably the 'bushwalking' is path walking. Probably find it harder to find a secluded free camp site away from people. In any event expect things to get more crowed as time goes by.

20 million camping bed nights in a population of 26 million people is meaningless, I certainly see no increase in the number of bushwalkers I encounter, I would have said real bushwalkers number were down if I exclude school groups

It is certainly one of the downsides to reducing and eliminating fees for camping in National parks.

Instagram etc also likely having an impact. Many people are doing day walks to the popular selfie spots and car camping at the trail head(campground) the night before.

I tend to agree that anecdotally I haven’t noticed remote campsite bushwalking increasing that much. The popular and maintained walks like the overland, larapinta etc being an exception.
