The few "reasons" quoted in the article are about as bogus as it gets. emergency/alternative.whatever access .

So you can't get up the bitumen road to Buller and going via the existing Stirling road and the new link will be easier ??? Of course then upgrade to the Stirling road completes the picture. And since we have spent all that money, it is only logical to ..........

Naturally keep the plebs out, or charge them for nothing, as they would like to do in existing areas of resort control. Damn those pesky pedestrians .

I'm not into conspiracy theories, but this has development by not much stealth written all over it.

Why a sealed road? I have a sense of deja vu, or is that a flashback, of the early 90's battle.
Not given much of a target, opponents will need to avoid tilting at windmills.
Pretty obviously we are being sold the thin end of the wedge here.
I can think of a few improvements to nearby roads for 2WD access to walking trailheads would result in a better use of the area for less cost.
