i'm walking / driving up the South island some multi days and day walks from Fiordland up the east side of the Southern alps

NZ - North Island to visit relatives. Then Dunedin for a few days R&R. Then cruising home on a ship.

You must mean the school holidays. That's when my workload goes up 50%.
I'm forced to take the week between Xmas and New Years. Too expensive and busy to travel.
Local day walks and overnighters then.
Next holiday for me is march - 2 weeks - Out oh ChCh. Hopefully west coast too. lots of contingencies.

Now Aardvark, if you lived in Tassie, you could have a lovely time off track, avoiding everybody else (ok, we'll see a bunch of people for a short time on track, but I can live with that), and exploring some stunningly beautiful country and bagging a couple of Abels.
Cost: Share petrol, so maybe $25 each.

WOW! That's an ad for tassie if ever i heard one. Who 's paying you?
My problem is that going to tassie will only open the flood gates.
I went to NZ to visit the Wilkins-Young in 1999 and have been back more than 40 times. I choose not to move there because it makes more sense to visit and live where i do.
Economically at least. I don't expect tassie to be any different.
I have a compulsion to expand my knowledge of an area and build on it.

Now Tortoise, if you lived somewhere other than tassie you also could have a lovely time off track, seeing nobody else and exploring some stunningly beautiful country and bagging some challenging routes. You would be surprised at how much there is that you are likely to never hear about. AND the cream on the cake in SEQ is that you can do it 24hrs a day, 7 days a week and hardly ever get wet from rain or get miserably cold.
I just finished the Scenic Rim over 11 days, it only rained on one day and it felt good to get wet.

Take your seasick pills Michael, just in case. We crossed the ditch after brief stopovers in North and South Islands in October. It can get a bit wild, even in a big vessel.

Off to Tassie again staying in Hobart for about 9 days with mrs. As always I hope to get a few day hikes in among other things. No real plan as yet, possibly pick up from last visit continuing to explore some of the south west, and probably some routes on Kunanyi/Mt Wellington I haven't done yet.

in location this holidays, will do some low elevation walks on rainy days when the heat is less. Its warm enough to get soaked and enjoy it-something magical about all the mini waterfalls that appear everywhere.

I’m stuck in a hotel room in Johannesburg for Christmas - not happy when I have a wife and six and seven year old at home!

Silver lining is I’m taking them to Disneyland in LA on the 30th December.

Been on an extended Euro trip and walking the cities and towns, clocking 15-22 km a day and no shortage of hills, bushes and stairs, often on cobbles. This is tougher than regular bushwalks.

Staying inside between mid-December and mid-January. Avoiding all types of public places, parks, campsites, shops etc. Way too busy everywhere and too expensive to go away. Luckily I can keep on working so I don't lose annual leave for a mandatory closure. End of January, beach camping. Mid-February, back to Tassie again for 2 weeks of day-walks.

Hi,

Pulled a late, quick over nighter on NYE to Lower Portals for some cool swimming.

Had a visit from the local lizard ranger to check our camp....

Best 5 star hotel money can buy....

And ducked down to Lennox Head between xmas and new years for some surf and windsurf fun, forgot how lovely that place is, was packed but somehow seemed to handle the numbers.


Now have to reset to get back to work....that is hard....

I've been to the Loire Valley a bit, then a few days in Ile de Ré before Christmas with my family. Then I visited the Cévennes mountains and the Verdon gorges for a week. A great little trip although I had a flat tire, on the same wheel as last year's trip. Here's a few shots.
