Trail name

I was just looking at this article http://www.outsideonline.com/photo-galleries/adventure-travel/north-america/Portraits-of-the-Pacific-Crest-Trail.html#slide-1 and considered the notion of the trail name. I'd never encountered it before. Does anybody have one? Is this something I've missed because I'm mostly a loner?

well i've been called a few things on trails, but as this is a family site I can't publish them here...

at a couple of the outdoor ed centers I worked at we all had nicknames, one to keep track of the 4 johns, 5 matts, and 6 sarahs! And it also helped keep the kids from stalking us online. a thing that happened far more often than one would like. I like the idea since it allows people to know each other on their own terms, I can trust someone with my nickname, and decide whether or not they know more later.

I even answer to "Hey you!".

The trail names thing is very much a phenomenon of the US thru (sic) hike (AT, PCT etc) where you keep bumping into the same people a various times and gossip about them with others when they are not around.

Pseudo anonimity, kind of like forum tags. If that happened here, I suspect mine would be something like 'Grumpy'.
