my understanding about volcanoes is, the ones that have smaller eruptions are less likely to give much prior warning that there will be an eruption, that was the case with the recent eruption on te maari crater, the bigger the eruption is going to be the more likely you are to have minor earthquakes or distortions in the ground shape in the weeks or days before it happens
