so i went for for a walk today in the mt mee section of the d'aguilar national park in South East Queensland today and there were a couple of post-grad uni students there doing a survey to assist with research into the way the new national parks in south east queensland are being used & managed. for anyone that isn't familiar the government basically turned a whole heap of state forests into national parks a few years ago, and rather than face the backlash of banning MTB/trail bike/4wd/horses from the park they set out some clear rules about what can be used where.
what do the members of this forum think about walkers sharing parks with other users?
personally i found that hearing the odd dirt bike or 4wd driving past was noticeable but it didn't spoil the experience. the park is nice but it isn't exactly a top-grade wilderness experience, and it certainly seems a lot better maintained now it is a national park rather than a state forrest. having a few areas of the park get torn up by dirt bikes seems a small price to pay to get a whole park.. the dirt bikes can only access say 10% of the land so there is a lot of land being conserved, albeit not in the way that national parks have traditionally been treated in qld.
