Munzee - Dealing with a geo-curse

Climbed The Pinnacle at Springbrook National Park which is a rock rising above the ridge giving excellent views. However at the very end attached to a spindly tree above a cliff was a barcode declaring that it to be a Munzee. A quick search revealed that Munzee is a new type of geocaching. Apparently you get an ap for your iphone and scan the barcode.

I have no issue with geocaching but not in National Parks.

My recommendation is to remove any that you find in National Parks. Any other opinions?

Hmmm it is an interesting one down here in Tas where so much of the state is a park...

My thoughts on it are along the lines of, geocaching is not a real worry as long as it is done discretely. However this Munzee thing you speak of i assume if fairly well visible... as such i am less inclined to appreciate it. Geocaches are usually hidden quite well.

Indeed, if it's hidden and people don't need to step "off track" to get the cache, no harm done. But a visible barcode hanging from a tree or on the side of a rock, I'd be tempted to remove it too.
My bet is there is a Parks by-law that would prevent such a visible thing being in a National Park anyhow.

There is probably some regulation re leaving "unauthorised items" in reserves. I will see what I can find but I do know that there are many geocaches in reserves. The idea of something "alien" like a barcode hanging from a tree does not really excite me and I suspect I would rip that down pretty quick smart. Our monitoring tags at least have the PWS Logo or the words Parks and Wildlife so they can be easily identified as having some authority.
