Before You Walk in Tasmania

Noticing a few queries about beginners and novice bushwalkers, I thought the little video "Before You Walk" might make useful viewing. It's esp. suitable for first time walkers or those not experienced in Tasmanian conditions.

I had a small role in preparing the video - and make a cameo appearance 8) The professional stuff was done by Roar Film, who did a nice job. Pass the video on to any beginners you know,

It was useful viewing!! I'm pretty new to bushwalking, although a fair bit of 4WD and off road experience, and thinking seriously about the OT. I found the video particularly interesting. Did not learn much new stuff but the vid put it all in the one place, almost an unwritten laws kind of thing.

A good video. Could they upload a higher quality version? 240p isn't that good.

For a novice bushwalker like myself it is a great video, very helpfull in educating children about carry in carry out & minimal impact.

I'll look into this, but I suspect that because it was made in 2003, we may only have that low-res version. And as for my "cameo", no, I wasn't the "inappropriately dressed tourist". I'm just one of the walkers sitting among the rocks in one brief scene. I think I may be waiting in vain if I expect more role offers on the strength of that :lol:

Yes, it was first discussed a way back here, but now it is in mp4 not wmv format.

If you look carefully at the movie , one of actors has his Lowe Pack on upside down . At first I thought I was mistaken but if you slow it down you will notice the waste strap is around is neck.

Latter on in the video it the correct way around.

Has anybody else notice it ?

I am surprised they did not include a PLB in the gear list as an essential piece of gear, I would not walk without one, cheap insurance and it may save your life. I guess the EPIRB section kind of looks at it but they are a bit old school.

Great video! Very handy for me in the university bushwalking club as we get a lot of international students, so to be able to show them the basics via video is a great resource to have.

It is a very good .. covers all the basics really well. 'Essential' equipment will always be arguable, even the choices of each item are... some will only feel comfortable with every item ever mentioned
in bushwalking media, others, wallaby skin underpants and a knife... it takes all sorts..

The word should probably be 'recommended'... i (for one) would be happy for a plb to be 'recommended', especially for someone needing to take notes from an entry level vid... so long as they are also equally well informed of the possible consequences (for those with Real emergencies) that may result from any 'easy ride home'...

Well spotted kbm! The actor was supposed to be so gormless that he didn't know his ar*e from his elbow. But most people don't notice.

Fair comment. But back in 2003, when we made it, EPIRBs (as they were then) were mainly seen as an option for those doing off-track or extended trips. Nowadays it might be argued that PLBs are mainstream and essential, although I'd still put them in the "to be considered" box.
