Bullnigang bounce...

Recently I've been spending quiet a bit of time in the yerranderie state forest so on the weekend I thought it was time to head a bit further west and have a look at the Bullnigang area.

In short the route followed went like this:

Parked at 500 acre flat Sat morning, walked up Murruin creek . Bashed up an unnamed spur 2/3 of the way and then followed a dry creek bed up onto the Bullnigang property.

Followed the fire trail to Tomat station, down through random swamp and then to the T intersection of the Millnigang fire trail which I followed to my nights camp spot at Cockpit creek (dry).

Next morning Millnigang fire trail until it terminates, bashed steeply down to the Wollondilly, followed the river up stream back to waiting vehicle.

Where do I start? For a while I've been thinking about a Southern BM traverse. Starting at Goodman's Ford head up to 500 Acre Flat. then up Murruin Ck to Bindook. then down to Batsh Camp and on to Colong Caves. Down Lannigans Ck to the Kowmung river then up the Unirover trail to Kanangra Walls. from there any of the usual routes back to Katoomba but I favour Moorara Boss, Harry's river, Black Range and either 6 Ft track or Cronje Buttress Cox's river, Carlons and Narrow Neck.

What do you think? The trick would be to get a lift out to the Ford.

Puredingo - Interesting walk, thanks for sharing. I especially liked the abandoned train carriages!

Kanangra - Hmm, that sounds like a pretty epic trip! I was planning on having a go at the route that Karl Miller and his partner did a few years back, but yours sounds a little more interesting than a mostly fire trail bash from the South up to Kanangra Walls. How long would you intend to take?

If you assume an afternoon start from Goodman's Ford then first night would be on Murruin Ck. I know several excellent sites along there. then 2nd night would be on the Kowmung river. The third night would be on Harry's river, there is a good spot where the track crosses. From there it would be possible to walk out on the last day.

Haha...No the trick wouldn't be getting out to ford (my daughter's always eager to rack up some driving time whilst on her "L"s), for me the trick would be keeping up with you and Alex!

Your route sounds very similar to one I did a few years ago with the late, and much lamented Bill C. of SBW.
(Alex, Karl was on this trip.)
Foul weather forced us into the cow shed in your 3rd picture.
We wanted to have lunch in there and dry off.
There appeared to be nobody about, but we still went and knocked.
Door was answered.
Reception was a little cool!

Now with that info Melinda there may well of been somebody home after all? I never bothered to actually venture past the front gate and knock but I did sound out a few "Hellos" just to let them know I was passing on through.

With no reception met and no dogs in the few kennels on site (thank god) I just assumed nobody about and went on strolling. I did stop and have lunch in the sheep shed a little further on the way and without trying to pry too much did notice recent activity about the place, so yeah, maybe out shopping?

I am not too familiar with the area around the start of the route, but Kowmung to Harry's is a decent push. Would you work your way up to Kanangra, and then via Mt Thurat to Mt Guoguang, and finally down the Krungle Bungle Range to Harry's? If you came down off Mt O'Reilly, there appeared to be a nice campsite at the junction of Harry's and Membedah Ck.

Or would you chuck in the Three Peaks just for good measure!

You could go that way. I don't recall much of a campsite at the junction of Harrys and Mumbedah? But then it has been a while. As for throwing in the three peaks even I'm not so sure about that.

You can see a picture of the campsite at the junction of Mumbedah Creek and Jenolan River - it's small but pleasant (and up Mumbedah Creek a very short way, not right at the junction)

Great trip there Tom. I enjoyed those photos. I agree that does look a neat little spot. Perhaps I didn't see it because it was upstream a bit? The water quality looks better than how I experienced it. Mumbedah Ck was carrying a fair bit of sediment when I was there last but it was after a bit of rain.
