Larapinta Trail Fire Damage

Mon 18 Feb, 2019 12:23 pm

This page is dated from February 6 - some sections closed due to fire damage. Expected to be open as normal for 2019 season.

And some solar USB charging stations have been installed.

I believe volunteers are being sought for clearing and repair works, although I haven't had a chance to locate any definite information on this as yet.

Hi,

I'm planning on walking from Standley Chasm to Alice Springs in early May. Does anyone know whether it will be worth the effort considering the January fires?

Thanks,

Peter

Can’t answer your question but I do know the flies are horrific at the moment, so be well prepared.

I'm out there now, but not at the Standley Chasm end.

For me, the fire is not an issue. It just exposes some interesting geology. It's pretty dramatic though, with some places completely stripped of vegetation.

Definitely bring a fly net. They are brutal.

How are the mozzies at the moment?

At least I won’t have to worry about leaches!

Was there two weeks ago - no issues with Mozzies but 2nd the comment about flies...make sure you have a fly net!
The fires have made some sections very bare but it does create an interesting view of the countryside.

The aftermath of the fire brings out its own kind of beauty:

It was a great trip with fantastic facilities and countryside. Fly net seemed to keep the millions at bay. Fire damage was not as obtrusive as I expected. The cycads were all budding and growing, they are so hardy. Only Millers Flat was depressing with the amount of fire damage, but it's in the middle of a section. Cow *&%$#! was everywhere around Spring Gap water hole and the Fish Hole at Jay Creek. Their tracks confused the trail sometimes. I'll be going back for some more, after there has been good rain.
