Interesting places off Tennant Creek - Townsville

Postby grahambb » Thu 28 Jul, 2011 10:23 pm

I'll be driving the above route in mid-October (with a week or so to do it) and am interested in places to visit. I'm a photographer and so would be especially interested in stopping / diversions to old towns, scenery / landscapes and people.

Cheers

You mean the Barkly Highway?
Head up north for a quick visit to Booraloola and Caranbirini. You could take the Gulf Rd from there if you have a 4WD (and the road's passable which it should be in October), but if not it's back south. There are some fascinating caves and sinkholes near Camooweal, and there's always Lawn Hill Gorge.

It's been a few years since I was up that way. Trying to recall what's fairly close to the main road.
There's Kunjarra, which is about halfway between Tennant and ThreeWays, from memory. You can head north from Cloncurry up to Normanton and Karumba, that's an interesting area and there's a lot of goldmining history on the main route south from there. Will have a think and see what else I can dredge up.

With only a week to do it in, options are limited.

Close to Townsville, try Ravenswood the old gold mining town.

At Hughenden, try Porcupine Gorge, which is 60-80 km north of Hughenden.

East of Hughenden, stop at Prairie on the highway at the pub for a snack, good place with old artifacts.

Near Cloncurry, try Mary Kathleen, the old uranium mine.
