We will finish unfinished business (Mt Donaldson + McAllisters Ck) on the w/end 27-28 of this month. Looking forward to hiking the park again now that weather has really cooled off. Let's hope there is WATER this time around.

[quote="weeds"]Heading into Sundown this weekend for an overnighter.....

What are you planning to do?

Done and dusted

It was a casual overnighter, three couples and it was the first overnight hike for one hiker.

We parked up at Nundubbermere Falls carpark.

Walked upstream along the Severn River for a swim at ??????? Holes or Tanks waterhole. The others are very keen climbers and spotted an good opportunity for some deep water solo/free climbing. We had a swim while watching the climbers in action.

Than it was up over the hill to a water hole called Bee Hive on the Severn and set up camp. Explored down river for a kilometer or two... went for another swim than back to the campsite.

Our leader was also keen to catch dinner, ended up cooking a yellow belly and a silver perch, quite tasty.

Walk out on the Sunday by following the Severn upstream to our start point. A couple of more swims (I practiced floating my pack across the river) , some boldering, a scramble to check out a cave, Monday Falls than the short slog up to the carpark.

Beers and pizza at the Brass Monkey Brewery.

A good weekend.

Very relaxed, too relaxed I'd say but as long as you had fun that's what counts the most. No swimming for us though; it's going to be a lot chillier.

Totally forgot to upload a couple of photos about the April 2019 trip:

Permanent Waterhole. It lost that title in 2019. First time ever? Who knows, it's possible.

Has anyone been there lately? Any water in the river system after the last bit of rain we had in the last two weeks.

I still got to complete the Mt Donaldson-McAllisters Ck Cct. Kind of a challenge since I failed in my previous two attempts.

Prickly Pears...lots of big seeds & very little pulp, tastes a bit like watermelon, but above all if not handed & cleaned properly their fine tiny spikes could get lodge in your fingers or worst case scenario your throat...

Definitely will be back....

Great to see a lot of water back in there for once.

Some tips for the prickly pears - pick the deep red ones, soak them for a couple of hours in water (or overnight) to soften the thorns. Or take some home and make some liqueur out of them with some vodka. Hmm the Maltese in me is leaking...

You can use a flame to burn off the hairs. Haven't tried it myself. Here is a video:

...just using a cigarette lighter. But perhaps push a stick into it and twirl over an open fire?

Cooling temps & running water... I'm guessing the park might be a little busy over Easter.

Another Prickly tip...

You can eat the leaves, too. I tried them once (out of interest, from a tree we had growing at work) and they taste a bit like cucumber.

I've only been to Sundown once, and it was the hottest, driest experience I'd had outside of the Channel Country. The waterhole was almost empty and very smelly, so I didn't get a swim. Between that and being charged at by a massive, cranky kangaroo it wasn't the best experience, but given these photos I'd be happy to give it another crack while the conditions are good!

Thanks Lyrebird...I never knew the Prickly Pear pads were edible too, you learn something new every day.

Head down there before or after Easter & I can almost guarantee your Sundown frown will turn upside down. :D

You'll experience the Sundown (like Barney). Can't wait to get back!

Hopefully you'll come across one of these lovely fellas in one of the Severn river tributaries like we did 2 years ago at night time while camping:

Hello!
Does anyone know where to find a darn topographical map of Sundown? Seems crazy going in there without one. Hema maps seemed to have stop printing them
Cheers guys!

Hema stopped printing anything useful some time ago :(
This business is in Brisbane and print QTOPO/Sunmap maps on demand; it helps if you know which series number you want. You order them online and they post them out. I've had several maps from them and they're good.
https://www.worldwidemaps.com.au/
Otherwise you can print your own maps from QTOPO on your home printer.

Someone I know was in the Broadwater area just recently and this is what I was told:

"The amount of water that is flowing in the Severn River is spectacular."

I'll be dropping by to check it out myself now.

I'll go for a w/end trip on January next year. Never been to Sundown being wetter than usual. Camped there in the open without a tent twice but it was as dry as the Sahara so no sign of bugs and mosquitoes during the night; however this season might be a totally different story. What's your experience like, ofuros?

All booked for the w/end starting on Jan. 8. Let's hope is nice and sunny as water will be plentiful. Going down the Blue Gorge this time is going to be very different as when I did it the first time in desert-like conditions. A lot more difficult this time around; same goes with the Split Rock Falls (McAllister's ck) in a downhill fashion.

Thanks for the report but not too keen of showers for this specific hike: Ooline + McAllister's creeks.
