Best 3 day walk in Vic?

Postby B-Man37 » Fri 11 Nov, 2011 1:47 pm

What is the best 3 day (2 night) walk in Victoria? I have done Lerderderg Gorge & Mt Feathertop recently and they are great. I am looking for others. I have heard that the South West Walk near Nelson is good. Any suggestions?

I agree, I think that The Lerdy is a great 3 day walk, haven't done that many but it was great.

As I have nothing constructive to add,

Start at the Melbourne airport, fly to Tasmania, walk onto a bus going to anywhere remote, walk for 2 and a half days, catch bus back to airport, finish at starting point.
(Just Joking)

Sorry....

There was a reason my Great Grandfather left Tassie in 1874 & never went back :)

The Wilderness Coast - Start at Tamboon Inlet & walk to Shipwreck creek is 3 days. Start further west & you can make it longer

Great Dividing Trail from Ballarat to Bendigo has some interesting sections

You could do two nights in the Mt Buffalo national park by linking Mt McLeod and the Rocky creek camp areas. W.

That would be a nice walk. The walking track west of Eagle Point was overgrown and a bit hard to follow for a km or so when I walked it twelve months ago. I don't think it has got any better. Makes for a fun bit of route finding (or not if you lose the track completely).

Plenty of options for three day walks in the alps - Tali Karng with a day wlk from base camp on day 2 around the lake or up to the bluffs above the lake, or Crosscut Saw and My Howitt from Howqua Valley.

Any of the loops from the Upper Howqua Camp incorporating Howitt, the Crosscut, Buggery and Speculation. Or MacDonald to Clear with a side trip over the King Billies.

James is right you can't beat the Prom, we are so boring, we walk the three day circuit walk every summer. You mentioned the Great South West Walk, have done three out of four sections but going back in 2012 April to complete the lot! Best walk ever and well kept secret, but this time will not stop at the Nelson pub at which I lost the will to go on!! It was a great pub though! Is a ten to fourteen day walk and kayaking the Glenelg for three days makes it really special

I'm also looking for a 3 day hike.

Done Lerderderg, Baw Baw, Grampians (North), stretch of Great Ocean Walk and about to do Mt Feathertop in couple of weeks.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Best 3 day walk in Vic?

Postby oyster_07 » Wed 28 Dec, 2011 8:14 am

Tail Karng. Love the river crosses!

Great Ocean Walk. It's not technical and not at all removed from civilisation, but the scenery is nice.

Great Dividing Trail. Again, not remote, but lots of historical artefacts.

Also, Feathertop is great but there are many walks in the area. Most people do a three day walk in a loop from Harrietville. This is a great walk, but consider doing a three day loop from Falls Creek.

There are lots of shorter walks that you can piece together too. My recommendation would be to get one of the following books:

"Walks, Tracks & Trails of Victoria"
By Derrick Stone, published by CSIRO.

"180 Walks in Victoria" (earlier editions are 150 walks)
By Tyrone Thomas.

"Take a Walk in Victoria's National Parks"
By John & Lyn Daly (http://www.takeawalk.com.au).

"Australian Alps Walking Track"
By Chapman & Siseman.

These books will have overlaps, but are each worthwhile.

One of the most memorable for me is the climb from Bindaree Hut up Helicopter Spur with a mid afternoon camp near the King Billies, or in the saddle below Mt Magdala, with a push on the next day over Mt Magdala, Big Hill and Mt Howitt to Valejo Gantners Hut, with a side trip to the Crosscut Saw. Final day heading back to Howitt, and down Howitt Spur, following the river back to Bindaree Hut.

Just be aware that Helicopter Spur is a little hairy towards the top with some possible pack hauling needed.

Some of the best country you will ever see in Victoria. ;)

I'd second that, although if you don't mind long days you can go all the way to Speculation and then down from Buggery via Queens Spur in three days.

when the southern areas of the Prom are open you can't beat
Sealer's Cove
refuge cove &
Little Waterloo bay , done in three nights.

Otherwise Mt Hotham/Federation Hut/Mt Feathertop/MUMC hut /Harrietville is a good bet for two nights.

I just used the Rooftop map of the area - I think it's the Mansfield map. The Vicmap 1:50,000 Howitt/Selwyn map also covers the area, but the Rooftop map gives you more detail.
Not possible at the moment, as access to the base of Helicopter is usually via Bindaree Rd and that's closed until December.

And it is a very good walk. Covers some of the best of the Vic Alps, but without the crowds. Plenty of variation and brilliant scenery.

I found Spatial Vision's Buller-Howitt Alpine Area 1:50K to be better than the Vicmap ones. Covers all the way from the Nobs in the south to Cobbler Lake in the north, and Howqua Hills to the Viking west to east.

It'd be doable. A bit of a slog, but doable. I've done Spec to Bindaree in a day before via the CrossCut, and Howitt Spur, and that was just mind numbing, Queens Spur would be a different kettle of fish though.

New here, but my best 3 day walk would be Lake Cobbler down to Kings Hut via some spur south of the the staircase track , then up to Mt Speculation via Mt Koonika and back to Cobbler via the jeep track.

Cheers

Queens is not that bad a climb. The upper section is steepish, but you can easily avoid the rock faces by curving around the southern side. Slippery route to descend, though.

I still like the sealers cove/refuge cove/Little Waterloo bay hike at The Prom.
It is best done by spending a night at each camp site so that you can stop and enjoy each place and not walk all day .
