Grampians Peak Trail

Postby MulgaBill » Thu 02 Jul, 2020 9:56 pm

What is the status of the GPT in the Northern Grampians? There appears to be little info online and on PV website concerning this section.
Are hikers allowed into this area? And when completed, will individual hikers who do not intend to use the campsite facilities be allowed on the GPT?

There's no reason to think the GPT will be exclusive as it incorporates many of the most popular features of the park.

I'd bet they'll be bans on distributed camping close to the hiker sites to stop people avoiding the booking system.

The ugly stairs they’re putting in will destroy the natural beauty of the place, like the ones heading off Major Mitchell Plateau to Jimmy Creek. Some around Mt Difficult are sympathetic, others are horrendous.

Thanks for the feed back. Appreciate there are "alternative" campsites available so will be interested to see if they ban camping off track. Can see the GPT becoming a popular walk in the Northern and Southern sections. As for the middle (around HG and Borough Huts) would suggest best option is to avoid unless you like steel railings and tourists. Sorry to sound negative but what stops the adventure companies block booking the paying campsites? Excluding genuine hikers who may wish to use them!

Every so often they put out a 'community update' on the track works but there hasn't been one for a while afaik.

A few weeks ago mount difficult was open from beehive falls but the track from troopers ck was still closed for upgrades. Can't comment on anything else.

If you follow the links on the website there's usually good info on what's open and closed, the state of roads etc. Better than most parks in that regard.

This has to be the slowest walk construction anywhere in Aus.
A short 2 night section was opened way back in 2015 yet 5 years and 30 million dollars later not another foot has been opened.

It's probably not the full explanation but there were native title claims after work started that had to make their way through the system.
