WILSONS Promontory National Park will be closed from Monday, August 19, until early morning Friday, August 23, to conduct the annual program for hog and sambar deer control as highlighted in the 2017-2021 Conservation Action Plan. Parks Victoria regularly undertakes dedicated conservation programs, designed to contribute to habitat restoration across all its parks. These programs include activities such as monitoring of grazer and plant populations, revegetation, spraying, controlled burning, and animal control programs. They are crucial to restoring habitat and improving overall landscape health. Sambar and hog deer cause significant environmental damage through grazing and trampling through the fragile environment, along with forming wallows in drainage lines. The program has been operating for five years at Wilsons Promontory National Park and needs to continue to reduce the remaining small population of Hog and try and eradicate sambar deer within the park. Parks Victoria will be working in partnership with the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia, the Australian Deer Association and the Game Management Authority to deliver this program.
