Mount Stirling. Access to water

Postby jen3103 » Fri 27 Dec, 2013 1:23 pm

Hi. We are planning to camp overnight at Mt Stirling. Is there access to water up there? Would appreciate advice on where we might find it. Thanks

I was up there a few weeks ago before the rain, and part of my mission was to look for various sources of available water.
I carried 3L for the climb.

There was tank water at GGS Hut and small streams were seen at various places next to tracks high up.
I didn't check Bluff Spur Hut as a big group was camped there.
Tap handle missing from tank at Cricket Pitch. I reported this to management.

Small stream flowing beside track below Cricket Pitch on Stirling Trail above signpost/junction 27 / 32 of Stirling Trail and Fork Creek Trail.
Another small stream beside track on West Summit Trail above signpost/junction 37 of Stirling Trail with GGS side track.
Contributors to Baldy Creek. There was water at a couple of places beside the Upper Baldy trail. (Near where a stream is marked crossing it on the trail map?)
Can't vouch any of these are still flowing. You may have to scrub bash a gully.

Lots of 4WDs near summit Howqua Track, shooters on Circuit Rd. and horses at Razorback Hut.

Take your luck.

Don't rely on the tanks. They may be full but exactly 12 months ago the
GGS tank was bone dry as some moron had left the tap open. (it is close to the 4WD track)
The small stream/spring avatar mentioned near GGS was where we picked up water, filtered it of course.
We went around to Bluff Spur Hut, the tank was good.
A more recent day walk before winter the Bluff Spur Hut tank was empty. There had been a school
there (we met them on the way up), the place was trampled, there was rubbish around and the tank was empty.
