Peak Bagging Website

Postby bailz66 » Mon 22 Oct, 2012 2:18 pm

Hello Guys,

Following the great work that Explorer Sam has done to put together a Peak Bagging site I am thinking of converting it into a web site. Perhaps even a website that could expand to other states in the long term.

I obviously want it to be useful (I plan on using it to track my own hikes more than anything) and would be keen to perhaps link back here as the initial source of the data.

So to do this I plan on taking the current spreadsheet and expanding it out quite a bit for Victoria to include a bit of a paragraph about each of the climbs. Allow for comments for each mountain and do a few other nice things.

Other Ideas I am considering

Leaderboard/Leaderboards
Stats about time taken/ lat/longs ect
Details about each of the hike
How the person completed the hike (There are more than 1 trail for a number of hikes and different trails may be worth different points)
Link back to Bushwalk.com as the home of Peak Bagging Discussions

So my question to you guys is what would you like to see in this kind of web site?

Looks quite well done.

Its not quite a peak bagging web site that I would be aiming for but very impressive work. Did someone from here put it together?

I'm interested in the 'how the person completed the hike' feature, as I think it'll help me plan my own walks.
Not sure if I'd be an active or passive user of your site but would definitely check it out.

I have written up a couple of climbs on that site.
The pointers indicate that jez is the administrator.
Thats the one on here called jez_au.
He's pretty keen - as he also does a lot for the "Friends of the Heysen Trail" website and Facebook page.

G'day bailz!

Sounds fantastic! I'm sure lots of bushwalkers from everywhere, particularly Victoria, have been waiting for something like this for quite some time. I know I have! I would be proud to see my work be a part of something bigger and better like a website dedicated to peak bagging. All those features sound great and I hope you decide to go through with this idea when you get some spare time.

Best of luck, Sam :D

I have been thinking about this and over the next few weeks I will start jotting down some ideas. Might bring them back here and go from there

I like the list idea but i think you should also be added points for Merit / worth. Possibly a star rating as well like climbing grades.
Mt bogon should be graded 7 with 3 stars
Mt Stirling 2 with 1 star
Mt Holden 1 with no star (local hill were i live in Sunbury makes a nice dog walk)

just to make the list harder :)
