Best 4wd campsites

Postby kyubi » Tue 18 Dec, 2012 10:08 pm

Doing a bit of car camping after Xmas and for the first time will be taking a capable 4wd. Anyone have a suggestion as to a great place to camp in Victoria? Looking for somewhere remote so rather not stay at established public campsites full of people.

Tips would be much appreciated! :)

Umm almost anywhere you want to go.
I would suggest looking in on one of the 4wd forums and sussing them out. There are a lot of places in the the Vic Alps/High country up past Licola.
There will be a lot of others up there then.
I would suggest also to work out the capability of your driving skills and 4wd capacity as you can get stuck very easily
It would be wise to go with someone else to learn a bit about the how to's etc.
Enjoy

With or without pets?

Remote, honestly there is no such thing in this day and age.

Snagging a top spot these days often requires an early start or lucky timing between thoughs heading out for New Years etc. And the next swarm of campers.

If you do not have any pets then i would suggest heading into the ANP. However most camp sites are large enough that unless you are with a large group (so as to take over a camping area), you will end up with other random people sharing your campground. That said, there are ie. sites like thoughs along the lower end of Tamboritha Rd, just out of Licola which if you can get in early would have to yourself; with the nearest other campsites being at least a few hundred meters away to a couple of km's. But... not what id call even remotely remote given you can get 2WD vehicles inc. caravans into them all.

Kellys Lane is nice, as is Horseyards / Moroka Gorge. But again, remote no. And you will be sharing the camping area with others during holiday periods. B1 track has a nice single group camping spot on the river, Chromite mine etc. There is Butch Country however there are limited camping spots in there, along with Caledonia. However i must stress these areas are for experienced 4x4ers ONLY, with full recovery equipment. I repeat these tracks are not for first timers without experienced leaders to guide and assist where needed.

If you have pets, then Aberfeldy and the surrounding areas are great however the 4x4ing is definitely a notch or two or ten above that generally found in the ANP in you find yourself heading down the wrong track. Generally much looser ground and with rain many tracks will require winching to get out (if at all) if you are down in a deep valley of which there are many. The areas around Dargo are also great if you have pets.

There is also plenty of pet friendly camping to be had North of the ANP, The Buckland Valley etc.

About as remote as i can suggest would be way out East, as far as you can go. Deddick, Cobberas etc. But you will not be alone out there and again, these locations are not suited to first time 4x4ers.

You'll need to be a little more specific if you want any hot tips on exact locations. Do you even want to head into the mountains?

I've also come to the conclusion that unless it's mid-week and outside holidays (Xmas, Easter, summer, long week-end) there are no good 'remote' 4WD campsites left.
That why we like lightweight bushwalking - most '4WDers' are just too lazy to camp more than 10metres from the comforts of their self contained 4WD/fridge/generator/4WD camper etc. You should see SheepYard flat and associated areas on any long weekend these days. The 4WDs and tents are SO packed in it's like a massive caravan park, no space anywhere - and everyone staring at each other from their deck-chaired campsites, surrounded by the latest 4WD doo-dahs sucking on tininess. (Not that there's anything wrong with an icy cold tinny!)
NB. I'm not in any way suggesting SYF is a remote campsite!

Just spent a few days up on the Main Range hiking - but away from the actual MR walking track and we encountered nobody until we returned to the MR track!

Remote..in Victoria? During the holidays!! You'll be battling! Somewhere in East Gippsland; Errinundra Plateau.
West of Melbourne, too hot or crowded. East of Melbourne, bushfire country.
Surgite et .. andiamo!

4x4Earth.com.au is a good site to look on.

They have a "find a track" page and a "find a campsite" page.
