Marramarra Creek - fresh or salt?

Postby Chamullo » Tue 25 Oct, 2022 11:40 am

Title says it all. Just trying to calculate water for an overnighter this weekend.

Thanks!

I haven't been to that spot, only Gentlemans Halt in that NP.
Always been meaning to do the Smugglers Ridge loop but, from a couple of comments online...

https://www.alltrails.com/trail/australia/new-south-wales/marramarra-creek-campsite-loop
"Murramurra creek is saltwater so bring own Water in" (sic)

http://www.wildswimmingaustralia.com/locations/marramarra-creek/
"The water is slightly brackish due to it being tidal"

Also looks like there are some industrial sites and hobby farms upstream.
If it was me I'd carry enough water in, even though I hate carrying the extra weight.

Topo (six maps) says tidal limit is a good km or so upstream of the campsite.
As others have pointed out, its catchment is Canoelands, and via Colah ck - Glenorie, Fiddletown, Galston and Dural - I wouldn't be drinking out of it.

The creek east of Smuggler's ridge exiting near the campsite might be ok.

Every tiny little creek will probably still be running. Find one with no development in the catchment and collect water there.

That's one advantage of walking at the moment!

Yes. We drink out of that. It's clean.

I took my kids on an overnight walk there a few years back. We took water from the little creek running down from the ridge between the campground and the old orchard, but it's a bit brackish at the bottom near Marramarra Creek (which is tidal). The water was fine further up past a little causeway. It was raining when we were there so there was a good flow. It's a terrific little spot.

I wrote up the trip on the link below if you want some more detailed info (possibly too much detail):
