water at Cooyoyo Creek campsite

Hi I am planning to the castle walk in Morton National park starting from Long Gully camp ground and planning to camp Cooyoyo Creek campsite. I would like to know the water situation and Cooyoyo Creek campsite. Is there water available , I have water filter and always keep the water purify tablets as well.

There will be plenty of water. I just drink it straight out of the creek. Very good quality water. Can you park at the Long Gully carpark at the moment? A couple of weeks back I read that you couldn't, which meant you had an additional long walk from the locked gate.

I think Long Gully reopens today. I'm planning same walk next month.

Off topic but same trail- how deep (or not) is the yadboro creek crossing early on? Can you get across dry or close to dry or is it knee deep etc? Cheers

It is pretty shallow unless in flood. But still, it is about knee deep at one part. So you have to get your feet wet. Maybe 8-10 metres wide. It is a pretty insignificant crossing, but you can't cross dry unless there has been very little rain for a long time.

Hi Ryan321, I was up around the Castle/Monolith Valley a week ago (27th-29th of August). We didn't get down to Cooyoyo but I can report as to the water levels of other creeks in that area. It's been a dry winter so not a whole lot of water around at the moment: the creek flowing down through Nibelung pass was a trickle and I would expect the water at Coyoyo to be the same. Of course, a trickle is all you need, so I'd say you would be fine.
If I remember correctly there are a few deep rock pools down the end of Cooyoyo Creek (near the cliffline/waterfall) which would be fine to drink from in a pinch if boiled/treated.
I talked with another walker coming up from Coyoyo who reported that the drop toilets at the campground were near overflowing... maybe time to get a helicopter up there, Parks...
We ended up camping on top of the Castle where water was sourced from several large puddles in the rock, mosquito larvae and all. Worth it for the breathtaking sunrise and sunset.
