Descent to Lake Hermione

Postby Roadtonowhere » Fri 29 Dec, 2023 11:54 am

Have seen conflicting reports about the best descent route off the Hugel plateau to Lake Hermione. The Abels pretty much says to head straight down to the west
but some trip reports suggest heading down the NW ridge from the plateau is better. Anyone got a firm (and informed) opinion, or is it six of one and half a dozen of 5he other?

The descent is fine. It's coming back up that can be painful.

Get a good aerial image (or map - it shows up in the ListMap topos) of the area. There's an obvious large landslip on the side of the ridge. Whether going up or down, head for that. It's easy going above and the liine is obvious. It's generally a bit slower below.

The white sideways E is the landslip.

the top of the landslip starts as a cliff, aim for one side to get onto it. I went north. south may be equally good.

Thanks Last and NNW. Got back yesterday from a trip to Orites Falls and your advice was very helpful. We hit the land slip right in the northern corner on the way in and were able to follow our own gpx route back up on the way out.

We saw you guys camped at the tarn up top. From the saddle we made an angled descent over to the top of the landslide, then went out to Cheyne Range for the day.Going back up we went nearly the exact same way except climbed up the southern side of the slip which was ok.Long day but kinda glad we did it with day packs.
