Arm River Track - Pillinger/Oakleigh/Ossa/Pelion East

Postby zacharycbruce » Wed 07 Sep, 2022 8:51 pm

Hi all,

Starting to forumlate an idea for a walk, probably mid-late November, and wanted some insight from those that have gone before me!

Wondering whether this sounds like a realistic plan;

Day 1: Arm River Track, up Pillinger then on to New Pelion Hut
Day 2: Mt Oakleigh and back to the hut (this seems like it'd be a fairly easy day?)
Day 3: Up Ossa and East Pelion and back to Pelion Hut
Day 4: Back out via Arm River

Day 3 is where I'm a little unsure, I think it's approx 4km from Pelion Hut to Pelion Gap without too much elevation gain, then maybe 3-4 hours return for Ossa, 2 hours return for Pelion East and then it's all downhill from there, so on paper it looks pretty managable if the weather is co-operating?

Any insight would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Zac

That’s a very manageable itinerary. Definitely try and set out early on Day 3 to give yourself plenty of time for both summits.
Pillinger Loop Track off Arm River Track can be a little vague in places, don’t expect it to be as clear or well marked as the ART.
Same for Mt Oakleigh, can be quite muddy and steep/slippery on the initial climb up.

Pillinger track was obvious enough last time I did it, although it isn't signposted so make sure you have a good map.
Making the second day short and easy is always a good move. There's a lot to explore up on Oakleigh and it's worth hanging aroound there to make the most of the views. Day 3 wiill be longish but it's a fairly common option and quite doable. I don't think Pelion East takes quite that long although, once again, there's a fair bit to explore apart from just the summit so it can be stretched out a bit. Another couple of months and the days will be nice and long so you'll have plenty of light.

Enjoy.

Thank you both, glad to know I'm on the right track!

r.e. Pillinger, looks like it wasn't on the 1:25k map, but it is on the 50k one and OSM which I have loaded on my GPS so I don't think it'll cause any major problems.

Now if only BOM could give me a 5 day forecast 14 days in advance.....

Cheers,

Zac

Unfortunately I've had to postpone my plans, I tore my MCL about 3 to 4 weeks ago and don't trust it yet. No big walks over the summer which is a bit of a bummer
