Where does that stand now Justine is now no longer in parliament? Hopefully she can or will still lodge this as a valid poll.

I also wonder how many people still think this has ruined their experience of the Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair National Park.

The choppers used for maintenance and resupply of the private huts along the OT do not fly in during the peak season. They only fly in during Winter specifically to minimise the impact of other park users.

Although they still do bother people at that time of year, at least they are not flying punters in during the peak season.

Having said that, I'd prefer that they didn't do it at all.

Just to set the record straight...
TasWalkingCo also do a mid-season resupply and 'poo-removal' mission in February. They base their helicopter operations at Arm River to minimise over-flying the Overland Track as much as possible as per the fly neighbourly advice for the WHA.

Is impact on other users the base line for WHA management? Composting could cut the flights in half. Is flying in food (and the chardy) a good enough excuse? Instead, permits double up.. do flights double up on the basis that other users have been tolerant enough to date? Slip in a heli- canyoning operation on the public good grace.

BUMP - For those that haven't submitted something already, today is the last chance to submit comments before the proposal goes to the minister.

I propose walkers and fishers combine forces and crash the ‘luxury’ camp with ghetto blasters and other obnoxious invasions of wilderness. Regularly.

Hardly surprising that the current Federal screwtheEnvironment Minister would OK something like this.

I was recently reading an article in TasWeekend from June 23-24 (I know, I'm behind the times). A question was posed:

'What do Daniel and Simone tell people who think access should remain as it is, for walkers prepared to walk in'

And the answer was:

'"Not everyone has the physical ability to walk in." says Simone. "You've also now got a younger, urbainsed generation, extremely time-poor, with no bush skills. They can't cope with that level of hiking and might not even want to do it. Just because they experience places differently, doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed there."'

Now, this answer grinds my gears. They are allowed to go there, everyone is allowed access to our magnificent wilderness. How great is that!? How lucky are we?! But the clientele that she suggests they will be accommodating don't really sound like people who are actually going to appreciate the place what-so-ever. If they don't want to walk in, then maybe they shouldn't be allowed access? But I guess money can buy you everything, right?

Wilderness for wilderness sake in my opinion.

The whole "National Parks are for everyone" and "locking up the land" argument is just so much *&^%$#! on a number of levels.

1) As you've pointed out, no-one is preventing anyone from going there; the limits are simply on how they do so, and those limits are essential in order to protect that environment.

2) Once the place is effectively privatised, non-payers are those who will be locked out - not from any disinclination to do the hard yards, but because they don't have the $$$. But those people, somehow, don't matter.

3) No-one using this line has any problem with the vast tracts of public land from which we are excluded by forestry, by Hydro, and through the operation of (corruptly obtained) mining leases.

Well should these hypocrites get their way I'll be organising some decent bush doogs on the banks of Malbena for sure! But first it's time for walkers and fishers alike to join forces to stop this thing. I may need to re-engage with face-bloody-book

That should have read "bush doofs" ... but I've been bush with doogs a few times, and that can be pretty scary

Is it correct that a Development Application has to be lodged with Local Government for this proposal to proceed further ?

If so, it is members of Local Government that we all need to lobby against the Development Application. Maybe we can make this one the same as the protest against the Franklin Dam. I'll be there.

Paul.

I'm not sure Paul. This was part of an EOI process instigated by the state. Given it's within the TWWHA I assumed it needed state/federal approvals. I could be wrong on that.
I'll be up there in a cpl weeks to get some campaign material, and to check the place out properly.

I notice on Google Earth there is a logging road that extends almost to the junction of Little Nive Rivulet and Nive River.

Would following the Nive River from this point, be the easiest way to access Lake Malbena ?

Thanks for advice.

Paul.

The one running off the Gowan Brae Rd up to Johnsons Lagoon? Yes, although there are access issues, as there's a gate some distance back on the Gown Brae Rd. Walkers can get permission to use the road for a nominal fee, but I'm not sure whether vehicular access would be allowed.

I'm not at liberty to release the leaked advice yet but this gives a hint. A government going against it's own people's advice to benefit a private operator.
Hodgman needs to quit.

MEDIA RELEASE
Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader
16 October 2018

Advice leaked to the Greens reveals the government’s own National Parks and Wildlife Advisory Committee do not support the proposal to build permanent huts and allow up to 120 helicopter flights and landings at Lake Malbena within the Walls of Jerusalem National Park, submitted under the Liberals’ EOI process.*
Greens Leader and Parks spokesperson, Cassy O’Connor MP, will be available to speak to the media about the leaked NPWAC advice, ignored by both State and Federal governments, as well as any other issues of the day.

*NPWAC advice attached.
