I thinking of making my own knee length silnylon poncho mainly for use in QLD. Would it be suitable for use on the OT in December?

Depends what you make i guess. The commercial large, pack covering type always seem like just a hassle, especially if the wind picks up.
Ive thought some sort of smock style would work best but then when thinking of features decided that the thing could end up looking a lot like a modern rain shell jacket...

Yes, more the short 'friar tuck' style There's likely too much wind, rain and too many potential snags for anything larger to not be a poor jacket alternative. I wouldnt go too light in the materials, I passed a fella last week heading off with one of those cheap clear plastic ponchos, I couldnt see that lasting long. Personally, if you would ever use it again a jacket would be my first choice, the rain shell layer plays a much more vital role here if cold as well as wet (likely at any time).

I do have a mont gortex jacket I bought in 2004 except it weighs over 700g, just looking to lighten my load cheaply. I just wondered if a poncho (maybe even with my overpants) could be used on the OT safely in Dec. I also have a Patagonia Houdini wind shirt (113g) that I could also use with the poncho. I can get some 1.3 oz ripstop silnylon from the US for $35 delivered. I think I can also get 2.2oz.
