G'Day folks...
I am thinking about putting together a file for the overland track.
sort of a digital guide-thingy
What i am thinking of would include at least:
the route in a .gpx format,
also points of interest along the way( maybe historical sites, huts, flora, views, hints etc)
and MAYBE a collation of track BRIEF notes (not so sure on this as it might be re-inventing the wheel with all the books and threads around..
maybe waypoints of visible or nearby peaks waterfalls etc
I was thinking that forum users could download it as they want....
I guess i want to focus on the Co-ordinate based data as the other posts and fact sheets around cover most of the broad info....
I havnt done this before so.... any one got suggestions or ideas or data etc??

cheers, Liam

ps
i guess i could convert some of it into a .kml / kmz file so it could be viewed in google earth... dunno...

There's a comprehensive list of all the high points in Tassie in this site's wiki in tabular format. This is easy to convert into other formats (I've converted the entire thing into KML in the past, and there are plenty of free KML/GPX convertors around).

So you could easily create a GPX file of all the relevant peaks from that list, for starters.

You can also extract them from theLIST website, if you're willing to do some careful scripting (I've done this before too).

scripting might be beyond me.... but i've been using GPSbabel for my conversions.... i'll have to check out theLIST etc... cheers for the pointers might be a long slow learning process... or a frustrating comedy of errors :?
...ok i've got the high places list - cheers Son of a Beach- and have the route paths as a daily itenary, both in KML format... just need to get hold of individual points eg historical spots, interesting spots etc.....

Hit up google with a search for Overland and kml or kmz and you should find a full track file of the Overland track including the huts. Its also available on the PWS website.

http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=7827#3

That would provide a good basis for your work.

yup i have all that (ie route huts and peaks) what i am looking for now are historical points to add, things like track history - ideally with related co-ordinates.
for example if we have a large button grass area, send me a co-ordinate and i can add botanical detail; or if there was an early explorer type story along the way; waterfalls, good views, tricky intersections etc?
anything interesting along those or similar lines?
