Mount Pelion West Info

Postby Oren » Wed 10 Oct, 2012 2:54 pm

Hi There fellow walkers. Currently planning to spend a few days around Pelion Hut and walk in via Arm river to climb Pelion West. A mountain that has long been on my list. I have the Chapman guide book and the Abels Vol 1, but I am really looking for some more description or some good photos anybody has, particularly of the route from frog Flats. I have searched the web and there is just not much about it. By the way I am an experienced walker. Cheers

Hi There,

I was wanting to get some information on Mount Pelion West. I am planning to walk into Pelion Hut via Arm river and spend several days in this vicinity. Pelion West has been on my list for a long time and what I am looking for are photos or details of the route itself from Frog Flats, from people that have climbed it from this side.

I am an experienced bushwalker and done as much research on this mountain as I can. I know that the start of trail is no longer marked, I know that it is time consuming and I know that it is tricky in places, particularly on the traverse across the top. I have read up the description in Chapman's Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair guide, as well as The Abels Vol 1, there just seems to be a real "shortage" of trip reports, photos etc on the web.

Any info or photos would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Been some years since i was last on top. The track was never marked but is easy to find. Once you have the start of it i would imagine that the rest will still be fairly distinct. Once up out of the scoparia the route is fairly obvious, cairns here n there. I can give you a description to find it if you like. Probably by PM, not particularly sensitive but not one for the regular OT hordes.

Was up there earlier this year, Nuts is right, once you find the start, it's a very good track.
Nothing to see here.

If I was doing it as a daytip from the OT I'd do a circuit. Drop off the Western end and come back under the cliffs on the Southern side. Fantastic walking with only a short section of scrub before you rejoin the track. Saves the rockhopping twice and the cliffs are extremely impressive from below. Nice mountain!

You mean BOULDER hopping... There's some massive rocks up there.
I remember that from Frog Flats we headed north & missed the turn, got to a nice creek & turned around, clearly walked too far according to the map. Found the start & wondered how we missed it the first time, then remembered it was at that point we crossed a number of southbound walkers, they must have obstructed the start.

arrr, right, silly me... the turnoff is described in a guide book i take it?

That would be a good circuit sbs, personally i'd need a camp somewhere (leonards tarn :) ) coming from the Overland campsites.

I am planning on doing the the PW/ Achilles, Thetis circuit. Never been up PW but have been up Thetis acouple of times.
There seems to be a route under the cliffs on the southern end of PW. Would it be better to find this and climb PW from the west without pack or just go over the top with full pack and down the west side.
Any info would be appreciated

We did it with a daypack from the West and exited to the OT under the clifflines, the only scrub is found as you leave the clifflines to the small plateau the PW track crosses. I found no pad through the scrub but it didn't take long. It would be a bit easier to navigate if you do the circuit from Thetis/Achiles then PW direction.

Thanks for that sbs.
Only reason I am doing it the PW- Thetis direction is I have tried it twice before and been turned back at Thetis. I decided I am doomed if I keep trying it doing Thetis first.
Will play it a bit by ear, I want the best weather as I go over PW so when leaving Pelion Hut I will decide on the day.
