Overland Fees ?

Postby Genesis » Sun 26 Aug, 2012 12:04 am

A question,

I am planning to do the cathedral circuit:

Mersey forest - Junction Lake
Junction Lake - Hartnett Falls (Via Never Never)
Hartnett Falls - New Pelion (Overland section)
New Pelion - Lees Paddocks
Lees Paddocks - Mersey Forest.

When do the section of the Overland track from Hartnett falls to New Pelion south to north in season
would I have to pay a track fee ??

No. Only applies for the track from start to finish.
Nothing to see here.

My Plans might have to change.....

I saw the post regarding the new "Rules" for the overland track or part thereof.
I might have to reverse the planned trip:

Mersey Froest Road - Lees Paddocks
Lees Paddocks - New Pelion
New Pelion - Kia Ora (Overland section)
Kia Ora - Junction Lake (Via Never Never)
Junction Lake - Mersey Foreast Road Via Cloister

I am thinking this would be a harder and less fulfilling trip what do you all think ?

Genesis ,
This IMHO will be a really nice walk and very fullfilling :) most certainly harder the the OLT however the diversity of terrain and flora is well worth it .
I have done this several times in reverse of your proposed rout and there are a couple of parts which need close attention to navigation but hey the Mersey does flow in the direction you want :)

CathedralWalk.kmz

This is a great walk regardless of your motivation. Search for Mersey walk and you'll find several different reports.

The hard thing about your plan will be picking up the start of the never-never track from the side-trip to Harnett Falls. It isn't marked. This track will lead you into the Mersey and then turn south and follow the Mersey upstream. You'll come to a spot where the Mersey changes direction (turns north after flowing west). The track can be a bit tricky here. Then the next trick is to find a spot to cross either before or after McCoy Falls (about mid never-never is probably better to ford) and this can be easy or hard depending on the river level. The track north from Junction lake is only a pad at the start. Just make sure you pick the right pad. :)

Side track from Hartnett Falls track to the Never Never is not marked but very obvious and I have been told that the crossing of the Mersey just above Harnett Falls is a good easy option when the river is lower so worth checking out, never done it and dont know what the pad/track is like but as I said b4 you can follow the river :)

Yes, crossing the Mersey a bit back from the top of Hartnett Falls is the way I have been - some photos and more details in this thread - viewtopic.php?f=42&t=5801&hilit=+hartnett#p83686
