Overland Track - First time

Fri 29 May, 2009 9:41 am

Hi all,
(first post too :) )

Myself along with 3 others are looking to do the Overland Track around the 20th of October this year. I've gone through the weather information on the parks website but was wondering if anyone who has done the track around this time of year share their experiences with the weather.

Much looking forward to the trip.

Andrew.

October is highly variable. You can expect any conditions in Tasmania at any time of year, but October tends to be even more unstable than usual. It's usually starting to warm up a bit, but you should still be prepared for very cold days, and lots of rain. The major cities in Tasmania have their show days in October, so that's probably why it rains on and off then. :-)

Can also be very windy at that time of year.

Generally speaking, Feb/Mar are likeliest times for better weather, and June to August is likely to be very cold with snow.
Other times, you can get either, even in the same day.
So I think just go for it, but as always in any overnighter in Tassie, be prepared for anything.
Above all, have fun - you are gonna LOVE IT!

Yes, that's why I was born then.

Was down there beginning of October a couple of years ago. Rain, wind, snow, hail, sunshine . . . and that was just the first hour . . . springtime is not really brilliant in Tassie. But the walking is, always.

Hi Andrew - I walked the track last spring (November rather than October), and we had everything from warm sunshine to howling wind and snow. But I've had the same conditions in January! I was recording for the Overland Track podcasts (see separate posting), so if you want to get a flavour of spring on the Overland Track, go to http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=7715

cheers

Peter
