gear hire - launceston for Overland Track

Mon 03 Jan, 2011 1:31 pm

Hello,

Does anyone know of gear hire in Launceston?
Tents. 1-2 person, <2kilos.

The Arthouse backpackers rents bags and some other stuff, but no tents.
Ian Ferrier at Mountain Designs in Launceston hires out hiking gear. Tent- 2 kilos, $60 for the week, $250 bond.
Backpackers equipment hire http://www.tasequiphire.com.au/ rents tents for $20/week but no idea about weight yet.

I was going to borrow a tent, but found out that "small and lightweight" meant 4 kilos!!! no way. The tent I want to purchase (gossamergear.com - really cool company) is out of stock, so I'm thinking about renting one. I was looking at tarptents and the lightheart lunar solo, but I really want a gossamer gear tent so I think I'll hold out.

Does anyone know of any other resources for hiring, borrowing? If the only tent I can rent is 2 kilos for $60...then I'm thinking about purchasing a tent that I wouldn't really want normally (toooo heavy, and more of a bivy sack, not that great features, pains me to purchase...) but would suffice for this trip and cost as much as renting. Also I have an amazon gift card so it's essentially free, and can have my parents ship it here...Eureka Solo Solitaire Tent 1.25 kg, $60. Looks like I might get a little wet though, upon entering and exiting if it's raining (highly probably in Tassie...) http://store.eurekatent.com/products/36 ... taire_Tent

I believe Mountain Designs in Launceston hire out gear.

They also have an arrangement (for a small fee) where you can drop off the stuff in Hobart and it will be returned back to Launceston.

have a great trip!
