Overland Track in spring.

Hi,

This may have been answered somewhere else on the forum as it seems very popular. So apologies.

- Has anyone completed the Overland Track in spring (Sept/Oct)?
- Would you recommend the months in regards to; rainfall/temperatures/hiking numbers?
- Are there any trout fishing locations along the trail?
- Does anyone know the best/cheapest way to get from/to the hike? i.e. Launceston airport to Cradle Mt and; from the finish line to Hobart airport? (is this even the best way to do it?)

Any assistance would be terrific.

G'day ads22,
Sept /Oct weather on the OLT can be at its worst with Snow and heavy Rain,
You can fish in Dove Lake the Forth River ,Douglas Creek and Lake St Clair (I guess you have plenty of time to spare)
Transport can be a problem you will need to check out the various bus companies (there is a mention of them in a previous thread )

Thanks for your reply. That is a bummer about the weather at that time. I might need to push it back to late OCT, hopefully the weather would have cleared a little by then.

Thanks also for the heads up on the trout locations. We are planning to do the hike over the six days but at a quick pace to enjoy some fishing time. Hopefully the creeks/rivers are on our shorter days.

on the topic of weather, is there a site that has weather/snow/rainfall conditions on the overland (i ask this having done NO searching at all, i assume BOM would have a station nearby somewhere, but i havnt looked to know...)

i have half answered my own question, BOM has a lake st clair station http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDT60801/IDT60801.94976.shtml, however it doesnt have a snowfall reading AFAIK

I've seen some youtube footage of people leaving/ending the hike on a ferry. Can you leave St Clair via ferry and bus?

Also; could anyone recommend starting at Dove Lake or Ronny Creek?

This is a link for the various private operators, the best option, not the cheapest. Check with the regular public services from lake St Clair to get to hobart.

Contact the LSC resort to book the ferry, theyll know about the buses at the time.

As corvus said, Can be snow and rain, can also be dry and sunny!

The Ferry takes you from Narcissus to the Visitors Centre at Cynthia Bay you catch the bus from there.
My personal choice is to start from Ronny Creek which takes you past Crater Falls and Crater Lake however you miss out on the magic view of Cradle towering over Dove Lake (if there is a view) by going this way and the rise is more gradual than from Dove Lake.

Now Corvus, you know as well as I do that in September-October on the OLT, it will be clear blue skies and 18ºC to 20ºC every day, with a slight tail wind whenever needed. Rain and snow? Don't even think about it! And fresh coffee at every hut too. Gosh, it's so much better than those old days!

there are also trout in the mersey, both above and below hartnett falls. spent a lovely afternoon there last summer fishing, all rather little but still good fun.
