Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI Pocket-sized Superzoom Unveiled

Postby GPSGuided » Thu 07 Jun, 2018 9:04 am

Saw it yesterday just as was investigating LUMIX TZ110 (or whatever its numerous model name is across the globe). But have you looked at the price?!? Pretty crazy! Is it justified?

This things is going to a beast for a compact ! I have the RX100 III and in many situations it outperforms a cheapish DSLR, I guess because of the processing. Shame about the price but I think it's probably justified.

I'm hoping they announce a new a6000 series model soon too (a6700 ?)

Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI Pocket-sized Superzoom Unveiled

Just saw a Camera House ad, retailing for A$1699! Better be frigging brilliant to justify that price for an 1” sensor camera.

Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI Pocket-sized Superzoom Unveiled

Tsk, tsk. I have resisted a camera upgrade for a few years/models now, but this lens addresses the RX100’s only shortcoming. Further resistance is futile.

I agree, that 24 wide and the 200+mm reach are fantastic for a travel/bush camera. However, there'll be a corresponding drop in max aperture and lens performance compared to the short zooms of old. The verdict isn't in yet on the final IQ at this point.

Question is just how much 'suck' this lens has and can it really stand out against its competitions here. I wait while the initial photo gallery on DPReview is neither here or there.

depends how fussy you are

samples here but i cant see any of them using the full extent of the zoom which is where the problems usually occur

Right on! The long end is what’s needed to justify this major price hike.

Not interested in hair splitting. We all know there is a trade-off in speed with zoom lenses. I'm very confident that the lens will be plenty fast enough for my purposes.

Indeed, there'll be compromises if one's focus is on a 10x zoom range or similar. IQ loss is part and parcel of that. Then the issue of cost and value is an individual decision. At $1700 for a pocket camera, I think it's reasonable to consider the justification. For that price, one could easily have bought a compact (APS or micro 4/3) mirrorless and a decent lens to match. Is the degree of size and weight saving worth the price premium? Personal call.

if your prefernce is for best photo quality for the money, you'll get a larger format sensor camera, micro 4/3, or aps-c
but if your preference is for compactness it would be one of the best compact superzooms on the market..

i'm trying to get one if the vendor will honour my order, really slow,,, overnight delivery is dragging on over a week so far... in stock didnt actually mean htey had it in stock it meant sony had it in stock in the country and they still don't have it because its on back order because its so popular aparently...
i have the mk one the zoom was only 70mm on that. but it takes great quality photos for a compact camera....
i got it when it first came out several years ago.. i use it more than my micro four thirds camera because of its size, more likely to carry it on the weekends for one off photos, only take the four thirds when i'm going somewhere new and going to shoot a lot otherwise its not worth lugging it around...
the mk VII is coming out soon as well. doesnt sound like a major upgrade, just faster focusing and other minor changes...
