Nap apps doe GEO tiffs

The Tasmap mapping derive is now putting out the 1:25000 series in this format, and also as Google earth comatible files.

So, is there an app that allows you to import these maps and use them in the field? Second, if I download the google ones, can I use them when there is no internet connection.

I have an iPad2/4th generation with retina screen and 128Gb memory. I've uploaded the tiffs as pdfs so I can access them, but having to change maps is a bit tedious in the middle of something, a seamless segue from one to another would be very nice.

All help very gratefully received.

'Maps n Trax' imports GeoTIFFs (disclosure: I was the developer of this app until a few months ago). It will take a while during import to divide the GeoTIFF up into tiles for faster rendering during display time.

pdf-maps (http://www.avenza.com/pdf-maps) also says it can import geo tiff maps. I haven't tried it (in NSW the topo maps are geo-pdf's).

I can confirm that the NSW geopdf topo maps work with Avenza PDFmaps in the field. No idea if the tassie ones also work, but I wouldn't think there would be any issues.

I still want an app that accepts ECW maps.

QGIS will merge the goetiffs for you

QGIS is an open source mapping/GIS program. http://www.qgis.org/en/site/

Here is a quick tutorial on how to merge them

Mmm - I see you are in Glenorchy - if you are a member of Wildcare (http://wildcaretas.org.au/ ) then this might interest you.

http://wildcaretas.org.au/branches/friends-of-gis/ - also check out the files page

Next session is Thursday night!

ECW is a proprietary format. The specs are not published, but they can make the software library available to developers, at a cost, but last time I asked them it was only for Windows (I think Linux was also planned).

(There are OLD versions of ECW libraries that only read old versions of ECW files available for some other platforms.)
