I just installed the basecamp update and was very pleased with the new implementation of the trip planner. It will now create hiking routes along marked trails on the map by just entering a start and end point (I used stored waypoints), much the same way it can calculate a street route. Activity needs to be set to hiking for it to work.

I might have been doing it incorrectly in the past, but the only way I could figure out how to do this was to draw tracks by hand, which was maddening.

You access the Trip under the Route menu on the device.

Does it pick up tracks or only roads?

Actually, I think I jumped the gun . It picked up the track I was using, but in hindsight it was named as a firetrail on the map, so perhaps it doesn't do walking tracks. Dammit!

Oh well, I'll keep dreaming.

Keep trying. It is good that you focuss on the interest of users as bushwalkers / hikers / trampers.

I bricked my Garmin 450T Oregan gps using the web updater that comes with Basecamp.
Wonder what to replace this with?

Excellent news, it looks like Garmin have decided that they need to provide decent service or lose out to phone gps
I rang their support and they agreed to look at the device and replace it if it had been bricked. Instead they managed to reinstall the OS and now fully functional again.

What do you mean by bricked?

Bricked = terminally broken usually at the system software level. Probably arises from the fact that if your phone/gps etc no longer works you can use it in place of a brick
