TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Norgie ?

Postby sailfish » Mon 23 May, 2011 9:30 am

Norwegian army shirt (norgie). Warm shirt worn under uniform. Anyone tried them, what do you think, had any problems with them being cotton etc?

I ask because the army don’t seem to have a problem with cotton but then their requirements are different. On the rare occasion I have got wet, I have just stripped off, wrung everything out, put it back on and kept walking and never had a problem. The activity has dried it all off reasonably well but then I haven’t had this experience in truly freezing conditions either. By far the slowest drying garment I have are thermolite(polyester) socks so I suspect the issue may be more about the weight and density of the cloth than the actual fibre. Most know the accepted, popular wisdom about cotton but what are peoples actual experience?

Regards,
Ken

Well to be fair to the Norwegians the originals were polypropylene and VERY warm, just like the original US army ECWS long-john top.The so called "Norgies" being sold at the moment are warm but only until they get wet or sweaty and are more for comfort than warmth.

When my kids were small I used to dress them in a polypro thermal with a TX10 treated skivvy over the top; that worked well for day trips to Lake Mountain

I actually have on for sale on ebay at the moment, it is an XL; if you want the link let me know

Cotton skivvies with zippers first came to my attention back in high school; they were made by "Holeproof" and were very popular with the physical Education teachers
