Looks like Macpac/Fairydown as suspected are going it alone as they have opened a stand alone store in Collingwood Vic and have an up to 60% off selected Macpac items!! hope this means the prices will come down now

Hi Brett, welcome to the forums. Thanks for the gear report - it is interesting to hear of different experiences.

I can't comment on MacPac packs myself, having not used them much, but I've found their tents to be excellent (3 that I've used a lot over the past 20 years, one of which is my current tent - all NZ made).

It is very difficult to find Australian made hiking products. We use One Planet packs and sleepings bags partly because the quality is better than any other I have used and also because the products are made in Australia (another plus is that they are one of the only manufacturing plants in Aus that is 100% carbon neutral).

It is very difficult to find products that are not made in china or vietnam. I am not necessarily saying any products made there would be sub standard but if the company is say, European and the factory is in Asia then it would stand to reason that quality control may not by their number 1 concern.
