TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Exped Auriga Mesh Tent v MacPac MacroLight Tent

Postby LateComer » Sun 11 Apr, 2010 3:00 pm

I'm considering buying the Exped Auriga Mesh tent, although I am not set on the mesh version yet, I might get the standard version. Has anyone had any experience with this tent? I haven't bought a tent before but have borrowed a number of friends over the years. I will probably use it as much for hiking as I will for camping, so I am happy to carry a bit more weight if it means that I am getting a roomier tent. The big appeal for me is the ability to pitch the fly first. I was also looking at the MacPac Macrolight, but the drawback of this one is that you can't pitch the fly separately. Does anyone have any advice, or experience on either of these tents?
Thanks.

2.6kg for the mesh version is fairly heavy with the macrolight coming in at 2kg. the minaret is a fly 1st pitching tent as is the WE 2nd arrow which both come in at around 2kg as well. they are a tunnel so they are a bit tighter and don't have 2 vestibules. all are good tents.

Presumably they are looking for a 2 person tent so the Scarp 2 would be more appropriate.

Thanks for that advice. I have taken a look at the Scarp 2, and it seems like a better solution. However, I just have a couple of questions about it.

1) How waterproof is it?
2) There seems to be a reasonable sized gap between the bottom of the fly and the ground. Will this compromise the warmth of the tent by letting wind in?

If anyone could shed some light on these questions I would be grateful.

Thanks
