TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Mattress and pad sizes question

Mon 01 Feb, 2021 8:58 am

Just an idle thought that popped into my head.
How and why did we wind up with our standard pad widths of 20 and 26 inches in the old measurements?

My guess would be, especially with regards to the standard width pad before the invention of self-inflating pads, that it was based upon what the most practical width a rolled up pad could be carried horizontally on a backpack without causing too many issues.

Good question. I wondered whether it was related to the size of the old rubber/canvas Li-lo's, but I'm pretty sure they were a fair bit wider than 20 inches. I no longer have one to check. Of course that would just beg the question as to why Li-Lo's were the size they were.
