TIP: The online
Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

I'm going to be walking the Overland Track at the end of August (first time in winter) and was wondering whether snowshoes are a necessity or a luxury for the walk at this time of year (such as
http://www.yowies.com.au/)? Or whether I could get away with just some boot chains (
http://www.xtm.com.au/prods_boots_chains.html or similar)? Alternatively, does anyone have any other suggestions?
Cheers,

Welcome
Theres a good chance you wont need them, if you do (and dont have them) you could be delayed at the start or along the way (in one of the first two huts more than likely) for up to a few days.
