Lightweight but Rugged Overnight Pack?

Hi John. Some ultralight pack manufacturers:

As far as volume goes, 46L could work for 7 days if you have a well refined Ultralight kit. Have you done many multi day trips ? I have a Six Moon Designs Swift which is 56L but also compresses nicely. A few litres extra doesn't add much weight to the pack. Also be aware that many of the UL packs are frameless and may need some adjusting to that style.

For a long trip you could consider an Aarn pack, not Ultralight but ultra comfortable which is the purpose (for me anyway) of having lighter gear.

Also, Backpacking Light have been doing a comprehensive report on frameless lightweight packs over the last couple of months. They also have a report from late last year on Internal framed lightweight packs.

I've been happy with my Golite Peak for one or two nights keeping the total weight around 8kg max. Also making sure that it is packed out firmly to create the "frame". For longer trips with more food and water needed I've gone for a slightly heavier but much more substantial framed pack. If it ever arrives.

You could look at Golite packs. The Jam is around 50l and made of dyneema ripstop. Very light at about 700g. I would recommend any pack with dyneema ripstop material for 'rugged ' use.

I've got a pinnacle (the larger version) and I've taken it through SW Tas twice. The mesh on the side has ripped but overall the pack hasn't missed a beat. It's very simple and light wieght and is still going strong despite being thrown, dragged, squashed, fallen on etc.

The material is not completely waterproof and all the clips and buckles are lighwieght though...

I've got a WE Bushranger purchased for $60.
They are a grea pack for 'rugged' use but are on the heavy side at about 2kg. The simplicity and toughness make it a real beauty in scrub.

Thanks will have a look at the Golite, but it seems I really need one with a frame so at least 1 kg is the go I think, I think that would be the best way to go for comfort, do any of the Golite have frames that are light ?

Golite Quest (72L) and Pursuit (51L) have frame and are <1.5kg. I would also be interested to find out how rugged they are as they are on my shortlist. They are not Dyneema...

I had a golite pinnacle which I loved for ultra light loads, but I find there are times where I need to carry around 14-15kg (especially when friends join me on trips and it's their first time. I seem to become a pack horse

I find this pack a really good compromise. 1.45kg. It's quite cavernous, can attach a day pack to the front and a nice harness

If you're checking out the Osprey Exos 58, look at the Exos 46.
The large one of those is actually 49 litres.
If it's just a 2 or 3 dayer you're planning to do then this might do the trick.
It comes in at 1.1kg.
