Terra Nova Laser Ultra 1

Got the spam from Ultralight Outdoor Gear this morning and they have this tent listed in the new gear. 552g for a double wall single person shelter not including pegs. Uses their version of cuben fibre for the fly. *&%$#! expensive though.

It would be nice to add some colour (like the cuben tarp below), surely wouldnt weigh much more;

Don't quote me, but I read about this a while back and I think the reasoning behind it having no "colour" is that the material the fly is made out of can't hold a dye...

... which doesn't explain why the inner is yellow, and made out of the same material (going by that weblink) /shrug

Yeah. The colour that cuben fibre gets is from the laminate I think. Not sure how they did the camo. Although McHale manages to colour their dyneema fabric. People say that it does rub off though.

They do try to skew their numbers abit to get down to that 552g, but definitely an impressive tent nevertheless.
At £650 British pounds, its not just targeted at the adventure racer niche, but more like the super-rich adventure-racer niche.

The fast and light guys (like the adventure racers) wont spend too much time in their tents, so double walls might not be so much of a selling point at this market. Its packed weight is more closer to 600g so wouldnt you think a TT moment might be a more sensible option at 1/4 the price and an equally fast setup time?

I'm looking for a new tent to play with but definitely gonna give this one a miss.

I have the Photon Elite, and at just over 700grams I cant see why you wouldnt go for this one!! They must be selling a few because it's now considerably more expensive than when I bought one several months ago.

MUCH cheaper and only a handful of grams heavier!!

The Moment in its packed weight does not compete with the The Laser Ultra 1, the Moment is actually closer to 1kg (mine weighs in at 995g this includes center pole, 4 pegs, peg bag and tent bag) this is nearly twice the weight of the The Laser Ultra 1. Even my Zpacks Hexamid with pole, ground sheet and pegs comes in at 450g, so 600g for a double skin is actually quite good. £650 comes in at around A$1012, is only money after all.

Hey Melinda.
Well I have used it probably 12-15 nights now, but nothing TOO full on. Have been i a bit of wind, nothing too serious though, but still im pretty confident it will be ok.
It's been in some rain and seems to hold up very well.

MJD had his in a very wet area lately and said it didnt show any signs of letting water seep through the floor...


So I guess, still so far so good!! Just the weight of them and the space you save in your pack is fantastic!! My tent + sleeping bag + stove weighs under 1.5 kilo combined.... It's awesome!!



EDIT - Plus they must be selling quite a few as the price has gone up $130 since I got mine....

How high is the floor tub???
You can't really tell from the photos.
I've been looking at Terra Nova gear for some time, don't really need it, but I do like to keep my eye on what's around. (Especially in the light weigh department!)
That tent + sleeping bag + stove weight is pretty good. Is that a summer or winter bag you are talking about???
I guess we are pretty lucky in my part of NSW ; we generally don't carry stoves (build a fire) and tents (just flys.)

It's funny, not being used to having fires, whenever I do have one now, I really cant stand smelling like smoke! It gets in all your gear! But it is nice to sit around a fire...

Yeh it's a good weight, the sleeping bag is rated to 0, but with my reactor i've had it in -7 or -8 degrees and was comfy.

Floor Tub?? Im not familiar with that expression sorry??

I guess 'floor tub' is the wrong term.
I mean how high does the floor come up at the sides (off the ground) before it meets the inner mesh.
(Re fire: we tend to feel lonely with out one!)

The entry door is mostly mesh, Rest of the inner isnt. Im not really sure how high up it goes sorry, I think about 6-10 inches?? I'll pay more attention next time im inside it.
